I didn’t know Mr. Montgomery since I’m a johnny-come-lately to LaVergne (five years in June). However, reading about his life, he must’ve been an amazing, kind person. Here’s some of what he accomplished on behalf of LaVergne.
Montgomery was a charter member of the La Vergne Lions and Men’s clubs. The Men’s Club was the city’s leadership before the city was officially reincorporated in 1972.
Once elected to office, Montgomery assisted with many projects, including helping form the city’s police department and bringing the first sewer line and water pumping station to town. He also worked to get the state Department of Transportation to provide funds to extend Parthenon Boulevard over the CSX railroad tracks.
I think we were lucky to have him in LaVergne. Our sympathies to his family and friends.

Joe’s granddaughter is married to my nephew. He and his wife are lovely people. They raised great kids and were currently raising two of their grandchildren.
He was elected mayor ‘back in the day’ but turned it down and served as vice-mayor for several years.
He will be missed.
