Iz Friday… OPEN THREAD DAY!

Since last week’s open thread day was so interesting, let’s try it again today.  WHAT’S ON YOUR MIND LaVERGNEMANIACS, LaVERGNITES, AND LaVERGNERS?  I’ll start…

I don’t want snow over the weekend.  I want it during the week when it’s hard to wake up and get the kids off to school.  Snow is not good for my weekend plans.  What are my weekend plans you ask?  I have about 5 CASES of GS Cookies I have to find a way to sell.  The trouble is they are not thin mints – the ones everyone loves (except my husband).   I have mostly All-Abouts, Trefoils, and Chocolate Chips.  This is the FINAL weekend of cookie sales so you should get them while you can.

Here’s the latest on poor little Analyce Guerra from the DNJ.  It makes me so sad to see her little life end so early.  You have to wonder what kind of monster could kill a toddler like that.  I pray for her family that they’ll be insulated from further evil and that their hearts will find peace.

I think today is LHS’s turn for the SWAT team drill.  My daughter said they hadn’t had a drill yet and when I took her to school, the SRO officer had blocked the drop-off lane.  When I was in high school during the pre-Internet days, terrorism, school attacks, and unbridled violence against youth was not a part of our psyche.  Instead, we had drills for nuclear attacks where we slid under our desks where if the blast didn’t turn us to dust, the radiation fallout couldn’t reach us.

Finally, what are they doing to Jones Mill Road when you first turn on it?  That road has been destroyed for no apparent reason…. The gravel never stays in so it’s now pitted and muddy.  Like our yards!  ;)

That’s my day.  What’s going on in your world?

  1. Spending AGAIN on the Waldron Road project — the city has already paid a large amount of OUR TAX MONEY to get easements & right of ways for this project several months ago — official minutes should be accessible on this item. However the board of Mayor/Aldermen had this on their agenda AGAIN this past week. Seems a red-faced Alderman Gann had to admit that this procedure was not done properly the first time & would have to be re-done thereby costing US ALL another almost $200,000.00. Is ANYONE “minding the store” in La Vergne or is this a case of someone jumping the gun & doing things without getting all the details ahead of time so that they can get their name in the paper & take credit for getting the project done? Wake up folks — go to these city workshops & meetings & make these folks accountable for your tax dollars. They are wasting our money and we need to let them know that they are being watched. This just doesn’t smell right . . .

  2. I’m not a Horticulturist or anything, but I like having a nice looking lawn. Where I grew up in Georgia, everyone had a nice looking lawn because the primary lawn grass was bermuda, a warm season grass. Bermuda’s downside is that it turns brown in the winter, but when it’s warm this grass spreads like crazy! A little bit of fertilizer and water and you have a golf course, but even with no additional water you still have a green lawn in the summer.

Compare to what we generally see around here which is Fescue, a cool season grass. Fescue generally stays green year round, but it doesn’t spread and it is dead in June, July, and August (generally when people are outdoors).

My current lawn is Fescue, and I work my butt of trying to make it look nice, but this year I’m giving up and going to Bermuda. I spend $$$ each month watering that darn fescue, but it’s still going to be dead in the summer when I want to be outside.

The only reason I post this is to tell everyone Bermuda grass will let you have a decent lawn with little work, and I think our whole city would look nicer if people ditched the clumpy fescue.

  3. thanks for the info on the grass. i know what ya mean.

  4. Isn’t our “biggest subdivision in the state” developer building on Jones Mill Road? Wonder how many homes can be squeezed into that area?

  5. Residents from LaVergne should be called LaVerpudlians. :)

  6. Cut and clipped from the DNJ

LA VERGNE — The local chapter of the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) will hold a benefit to raise funds for an officer who has been off work due to an illness for nearly a month.

A chili dinner and silent auction is being planned to raise money for Officer Karl Tartt. Tartt said while working out one day, he noticed that his left leg was twice as big as his right. Doctors found 17 blood clots in his leg. A few days later, the condition had spread to his left arm.

Feb. 7 was his last full day of work. Since that time, he has spent most days at the doctor’s office getting shots and medications to thin his blood.

FOP members are looking to raise about $8,000 during the benefit, which will take place from 5 to 8 p.m. March 28 at La Vergne Lake Elementary, 201 David’s Way.

Tickets for the event are $6 and are being sold in advance at the La Vergne Police Department, 5093 Murfreesboro Road. In addition to the chili dinner, the La Vergne Senior Citizens will hold a bake sale and community members are invited to participate in a karaoke contest.

  7. Okay, free Friday! Guess what! I emailed the mayor’s office on Wednesday…got a response from his staff on Thursday…and the problem I complained about was fixed by 2 pm on Thursday!!!! WOW!!!

  8. Ok gina, I am hooked. What is the problem you got fixed so quickly?

  9. We also gave up on fescue and went to Bermuda about 10 years ago. While it does look great in August when fescue is scorched and dead, Bermuda does have a downside. It spreads like wildfire, and I don’t care what barriers you put up, it’ll get into flowerbeds, driveway/sidewalk/curb seams and other places you don’t necessarily want it to go. I spend the better part of the summer pulling the runners out of flowerbeds, but can’t seem to kill the stuff. It’s also completely impervious to Round-up and other weed killers. Another (albeit minor) drawback is the fact that it’s like straw in the winter and the kids and my dog (who loves to roll in it) track it in my house on a daily basis!

Everything considered, though, it’s still preferable to fescue.

  10. My problem (and any body else’s problem who traveled on my street) was a HUGE hole. It was caused by a water leak and kept getting bigger. Public Works dug around it and threw down some gravel and put orange cones around it. At first it was no biggie… but after 3 weeks and lots of rain… it became a big problem. I kept waiting for someone to run over my mailbox when dodging the hole. Finally, I got fed up and decided to see if the Mayor’s office would indeed answer an email. I definitely got an answer. :)
