In preparation for Veteran’s Day tomorrow, I thought I’d post this information about what we’re doing in LaVergne to honor our military veterans.

When Jeff McCann was principal of Roy Waldron School (and probably principals before him), they had a Veterans’ Day Ceremony every year.  Mr. McCann is now at LaVergne Lake Elementary and he continues the tradition.  According to the Daily News Journal,

La Vergne Lake Elementary hosts its annual Veterans Day celebration at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday in the school gym. Two students will read brief stories they have written about veterans. Some fifth-graders will be writing letters to veterans that will be hand-delivered by a teacher to the York VA in Murfreesboro.

In addition, Mayor Erwin will speak at VFW Post 8422.

11 a.m. VFW Post 8422 ceremony at Town Hall, 315 S. Lowry St. La Vergne Mayor Ronnie Erwin will serve as guest speaker, Smyrna Fire Department Honor Guard to present the colors at 11 a.m. Open house after 11 a.m. at post, 10157 Old Nashville Highway.

If you can’t attend these events, please remember to thank a veteran tomorrow.  After the shootings at Ft. Hood, Texas we are reminded that these people put their lives on the line every day for our country.  Their service is truly heroic.

This just breaks my heart!  Within the past 3 days, a black teen-aged kitten has appeared out of nowhere… and a black fuzzy small “dog”, and a “used to be” orange cat.    For some unknown reason people tend to discard animals in my neighborhood, it used to be “in the country” until the developers found us, but that’s hardly the case now.    Being an animal lover, I have taken in more than my fair share of cats and wondered why my eyes were on fire after holding them.  Well DUH, I’m allergic to them… it took me over 20 years to figure that out!   I always blamed it on pollen… stoopid!

Do we have our own Animal Control office or do we have to fetch them from the ‘Boro?

Bart Gordon voted against the Health Care Reform bill the passed in the U.S. House of Representatives last night.  Personally, I think we need health care reform and that all people should have access to good health care without going personally bankrupt.  Of course, naysayers believe it will bankrupt the country.

According to the Daily News Journal, Rep. Gordon said he voted no because it the measure didn’t adequately reduce health care costs.

“I firmly believe that any responsible health care bill must do two things: improve access to health care for small businesses and the uninsured, and reduce health care spending,” he stated in a press release. “This bill does one but not the other, it falls short of sufficiently cutting health care spending.”

There are still spots available for the La Vergne Park and Recreation Department’s annual Just for Kicks Kickball tourney, which will take place beginning at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 14.

The event will take place at Veteran’s Memorial Park, 115 Floyd Mayfield Drive in La Vergne. Cost to play for the 18-and-older tournament is $75 per team. There is a three female minimum for each team.

Meanwhile this is a great day to do some outside maintenance.  put your water hoses away for the winter, sweep off your porches, clean your windows… get everything ready to hang your Christmas lights in a few weeks!  Happy Saturday!

First, I apologize for everything being in bold font.  I don’t know what I did to make it happen and don’t know how to fix it so that’s where we are for now until one of my brain cells fires an “A-ha!” moment to me.

One of my friends has experienced many ups and downs with the special education services offered at our county schools.  When she transferred to one school, for example, her daughter was given a chance to take band but her son was denied and told there was no room in the classroom – which she clearly knew to be untrue.  He was already labeled with having some special needs and that shut him out of taking the class.

Deborah has had to fight for every step forward she takes and became so skilled that she was hired by a state agency to be a case worker for other special education families when their children had similar discriminatory experiences.  Today, she is working on her own as a Special Education Parent Consultant.  If you have a special needs student, feel they are being treated unfairly, and need help please remember my friend Deborah Balthrop.  She can help.  Deborah can be reached at deborahbalthrop (at) yahoo (dot) com or by phone at (615) 593-6048.

I ‘ve already had my regular flu shot, but want to get the H1N1 as well.  However, I’m not sure where to go.  My regular shot was simple – I walked into the quickie clinic at Kroger and 5 minutes and a sore arm later, I was done.

The DNJ posted about that the Health Department had shots available yesterday.   The article said you could visit the Tennessee Department of Health to see where more shots are available.  When I dug deeper, I found this link to the flu clinic locator.   It looks like the H1N1 shot is available mostly in the Memphis area, but if you check regularly you may be able to find a shot somewhere in Rutherford County.
