The Week Before Thanksgiving Blues

Last time we tried this, we had very very few comments, but I’m going to try again.  OPEN THREAD!  What’s going on in LaVergne?  In your neighborhood?  At work?  To me, everything seems quiet on the western front.  How about in your neck of the woods (do I sound like Willard Scott)?

I will say that the election is over.  Time to take the signs out of your yards people!

What are your plans for Turkey Day?  Chow fest?

  1. I”ve been so swamped with work and school that I’ve barely had time to peek my head out and see what’s going on in my neck of the woods. I did notice last night that there are already quite a few Christmas displays in full bloom! And the police substation is looking less mobile and more stable. Do I recall correctly that the grand opening party thingy is this weekend?
And, I came across a blog one day, written by a person who is trying to bring a dog park to La Vergne! A DOG PARK! I’d love to see a dog park here, although I can’t imagine where one would go. And since I didn’t save the link, and don’t remember the name of the blog, I’ve not been able to find it again. So…if you’re out there, give me a shout. I’d really like to hear your plans for a dog park.

  2. Why do we need a dog park? Don’t the pooches have plenty of room to roam? My dog has an acre fenced in and those that aren’t fenced seem to rove about freely.

I thought dog parks were found in bigger cities like San Fransico where the housing is stacked on top of each other.

  3. Hope everyone has a safe and happy turkey day!!! Please remember the Chad Bowman Memorial Chili Dinner Saturday, Noverber, 22 @ LHS 4-8. The cost is $5.00 with all proceeds going to the Bowman Family. Lets all be thankful for what we have and remember the ones that have lost loved ones the last year.
I would also like to thank everyone for all your support this last election. I sure am glad it is over!!!! Remember my web site http://www.sennamosley.com. I am going to keep it up and running and with the HELP of a dear, sweet, kind, loving, generious lady that we all adore, I hope to learn how to post each M/A meeting agenda and mintues on it. Any suggestions you would like to see please feel free to post on this site on e-mail me. I trying to keep the citizens informed.

  4. Angie B – there’s a few dog parks around town, but they are not very convenient to La Vergne. It does not have to be a big city. Nashville, Brentwood, Franklin, even Bellevue all have dog parks. We love taking our Sunny-dog to the big dog park downtown, at Centennial Park. She loves it too, but it’s so far to go. As far as the dogs roaming freely, well, the dog park is for those of us who choose to follow leash laws and do not have the luxury of a big yard. The dogs really enjoy having a big open area to socialize with each other and roam around freely for a bit. And it’s a great way to build community connections. I think it would be great for our little community to help everyone (at least the dog-people) get to know each other better.

  5. Kathy,

Have you thought about putting up a general marketplace on this site? It would be a LaVergne version of Craigslist. I have sold several things on Craigslist but there are soo many items posted daily that its hard to keep from getting your items lost in the mix. Having local buyers would be a plus as well.

  6. Thomas – I would love to do something like that but it’s beyond my web skills. If anyone knows how, please contact me because I’m open to it.

Also, I’ve often thought of building a forum here, but 1.) don’t know how, and 2.) would have to have diligent moderators.

Senna – I’ll volunteer to help you post agenda and minutes! :)

  7. Kathy, you are awsome!!!!!!!!!!!

  8. Why post minutes and agenda’s when they are already on the city website? Now if you want to get input on agenda items, that’s one thing, but it doesn’t make sense to duplicate what is already available.

  9. blah, blah I guess I can not please everyone!! Besides, why does it matter to you if I also place them on MY site. All I am trying to do is make it as easy as possible for the citizens of La Vergne to be involved. Maybe someday I can make you happy!!!!! Hope you have a great Thanksgiving!!!

  10. For those who are home at 6:30pm watching HGTV..have you guys noticed that Nashville is becoming very popular on House Hunters? I love that show! Just a thought…

  11. Hoot! I recently worked with a Nashville buyer and we looked all over God’s creation to find her a house. I watch these shows to see if I showed any of those homes to that buyer! :)

  12. Saw that there is a Cheddar’s being built by Red Robin. I looked up Cheddar’s but not sure if they are any good. Anyone tried that place before??

  13. KC, we got to go to a Cheddars in KY over the summer and were pleasantly surprised by very reasonable pricing and yummy food. Another good add to the area!

  14. I’m probably “dating” myself, but does anybody remember Ireland’s? That place was the schizz!!!!

  15. Cheddar’s is a great place, I was pleased to see the sign, why do we always have to drive to Smyrna to spend our money???

  16. Here is my 2 cents worth:
    – Dog Park…our dog has a large fenced in back yard to run in – sorry not interested

    – La Vergne version of Craigslist…very interested in having something like this because when I want something off Craigslist it is too far to go & pick up

    – IHOP…does anyone know when IHOP will be opening up

Congrats to Senna on another term at La Vergne…

Congrats to Kathy for doing such a great job on this blog

    Happy Thanksgiving to all!

  17. nclb, not only do we have to drive to Smyrna to dine out, but what’s worse is now they won’t have to drive here to buy their booze from us :(

  18. How about some sidewalks? I live on Lavergne lane and it’s seriously busy with traffic. The same goes for Stones River Blvd and others. Has anyone heard of sidewalks around here? I guess I’m from areas where sidewalks are everywhere. Also, how about a swimming pool? We have a population of ~25,000 but no public pool?

  19. Snowmanhow, Clearly you are a person who thinks just like me. I’ve been harping about sidewalks for a long time and the good news is the city has been extremely responsive at least in commercial areas and school zones. If they can move on to residential areas next, then woo-hoo. Or make builders/developers put them on BOTH sides of the road.

As far as a public swimming pool goes, again you’re preaching to the choir. Getting a swimming pool was one of the first things I started babbling about / begging for when I moved here. Maybe someday.

  20. During the Summer, the LaVergne Parks & Rec center operates the LaVergne High School Pool and it is open to the public for $1 per person.

  21. They’ve got the option of either making the roads narrower to install sidewalks or making your yards shorter.

The problem is the fault of the developers. Their should have been sidewalks to begin with, but meh.

  22. No, they don’t have to make the road narrower (or is it more narrow?). The city owns a right-of-way to install sidewalks anywhere they want if it’s directly next to the road.

  23. Ireland’s was the bomb!! Those little steak and biscuits covered with shoestring fries and gravy for dipping. They reopened it briefly a few years ago, but it just wasn’t the same.

It was always a huge treat when Daddy took us there for dinner since a middle class family of 6 didn’t go out to eat much in the 70s.

  24. Kathy – that is good to hear. Hopefully they will start putting sidewalks in the residential areas. I agree that they should be on both sides of the street, but for starters, I would be happy with one side of the street!

I don’t completely fault the developers, because the city should have required sidewalks when the developers were were submitting plans before the first house was built. At any rate, we should at least solve that for new homes going forward, and get sidewalks along the busy streets. I’ve seen a few short pieces of sidewalk in front of a few homes along Bill Stewart Blvd. Why did they end up with sidewalk and the majority did not? It looks random to me.

The addition of a sidewalk would not shorten the yard. Generally, you own up to the property pins, which are on the house side of the sidewalk anyway, but you are responsible for the sidewalk and curb & gutter. At least that’s how it works up North, which means that you shovel snow in the winter, cut the grass in the summer, and replace a section of sidewalk if it is cracked or heaved badly.
