Chatting with Gubernatorial Candidate Mike McWherter

At This is LaVergne, we always welcome candidates for public office AND people already serving to let us know their positions on issues.  We are a platform to get their messages across to local readers via a method outside of main stream media.  Two weeks ago, I was given an interview with Gubernatorial Candidate Mike McWherter.  I have to admit – I liked him.  If you have questions, you’re welcome to contact him directly through his website here.   The interview:

September 16, 2009

“Why are the members of our state legislature such idiots?” I asked in reference to the recent law allowing guns in bars. Now I have nothing against guns, nor do I have a problem with bars, but guns in bars? Really? REALLY???

Mike McWherterIt was in his answer to that question that I learned Mike McWherter is a true diplomat and statesman. He agreed that it is never a good idea to mix alcohol and guns, but added in defense of our legislators “I was 12-years old when my father went to legislature and through the years I’ve seen some really fine people who do have people’s interest at heart and work hard to make it a better state in so many ways.”

McWherter is the son of former Governor Ned McWherter and hopes to hold the same office after the 2010 election. Like the public servants who’ve gone before him, McWherter is dedicating his service to making the state a better place to live.

While focusing on the state is important, often it’s the partnership with the federal government that can boost a state from average to extraordinary. McWherter said, “It’s very important that the governor have a good working relationship with our delegation in Washington and keep them informed of what’s going on in the state. We want to make sure we get our fair share of any revenue coming back to states.” McWherter said there have been times when we’ve paid in more as Tennesseans than we were able to realize back. “That’s part of what the Governor needs to do is to see that we get our fair share.”

Fall Break is Next Week??

ivyducksI just realized today that Fall Break is next week for our local schools.  If the weather is as beautiful next week as it is today, I may have to head over to Walden Pumpkin Farm for a half day or a hayride.  Maybe dig out a fishing pole and try my luck at Percy Priest Lake…

I’m looking for more ideas for local and inexpensive things to do (inexpensive being the key word).  Should we have another get-together for This is LaVergne readers, writers, and lurkers?  Where?  When?  Suggestions are welcome!!

Open Thread Friday!

It’s been a while my friends!  Let’s open the floor for what’s on your mind LaVergne!  I’m thinking Little Debbie chocolate cupcakes are to-die-for …  I’m also thinking this may be a good time to open my membership in Curves!  What are you thinking about today?

Ding Dong! Or “You have Mail!”

I’m sure that you’ve all seen the commercials on TV showing some of AVON’s many, many wonderful products.  We have a very wide range of items to choose from and I would love to show you what we have.  Our Holiday items are here and there are more on the way!  From Halloween to Christmas, we’ve got you covered.

Would it be okay if you could help keep your family a little safer from the flu for as little as $2.00?  Or what if you could get a jump start on holiday shopping and save up to 70% on jewelry?

Visit my on-line store at or just call me and I’ll be more than happy to meet with you!

Ghost Gnats

Do you remember a year or so ago that we wrote about the evil giant mosquitos (aka crane flies)?  Guess what’s bugging me now?

Have you seen those little white gnats flying around everywhere?  They freak me out.   A free guest post on This is LaVergne to the first person who can tell me what they are!!

Pig in a Blanket

I drove by the house the other day with the pig in the back yard.  Yes… it’s unmistakably a pig.  A pig.  In a yard.  And I have pictures!

Here Piggy

Here it is again…

Piggy Piggy

And if you want to see what the pig looks like on video, tune in to WSMV- Channel 4 News tonight at 5:00 p.m. Intrepid reporter Deanna Lambert brings you the story, what the neighbors think, AND what one of our Aldermen said about the piggy.

9-11 … Where Were You?

911lightmemorialCan you believe tomorrow it will have been eight years?  Everyone remembers that day … even my daughter who was six years old at the time.  They didn’t tell them at her school – just dismissed early and then the parents told their children.

I couldn’t tell my kids, though.  I was working at a conference in Santa Fe, New Mexico.  It was a grim day as we watched the state treasurer of New York learn that 32 of his employees were lost.  My colleagues and I drove back home – stopping at the Alfred Murrah Federal Building Memorial in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on the way.  The weirdest was going through Texas and seeing one lone military plane in the sky.  I collected newspapers at every stop and still have them all.

Where were you on September 11, 2001?
