The Official This Is La Vergne Endorsement Post

First, I would like to thank the 12ish people who came to the meeting tonight. Your input was extremely valuable and we appreciate all of you. Let’s talk a bit about the process we used to come up with an endorsement. We listed each candidate and discussed pros and cons of each person. We listed all we could think of, including some silly ones like one person’s con: “Doesn’t give away Twinkies.” There was also a lot of discussing of fonts that each candidate used for their signs. It was revealed that I am a font snob.

After we had discussed each candidate in every category, we then voted by a show of hands as to who the site should endorse. For the mayoral candidates, each person was allowed one vote. For the alderman candidates, each person was allowed three votes, since it was decided the site would like to endorse three candidates.

So, let’s get to the endorsing.

Mayor:

We spent quite some time discussing the three candidates for mayor. Each person has some great qualities about them. But there can be only one winner, and that winner was….

Senna Mosley

Some of the things that were mentioned about Senna were some of the really great things she did during the flood for the people of La Vergne. Many people who were there had a Senna-worked-tirelessly-during-the-flood story. Personally, at Old Timer’s Day I had a couple of different people tell me that Senna had been really good about checking up on them both during the flood and afterward.

Another thing people are very impressed with is that Senna is very accessible. She answers her cell phone and talks to the people who call. If she doesn’t answer when you call, she calls back very quickly. She answers questions on the site and is good about returning email.

She has great knowledge of the inner workings of the city, and does research things so she can form her own opinion. She is excited to lead the city in a new direction, and appears to be inexhaustible. Everyone who is friends with her states she is a really good friend.

So, kudos, Senna! You have a lot of very enthusiastic supporters.

I don’t want to leave the other two candidates out in the cold. Many positive things were said about both Ronnie Erwin and Mike Slinker. Everyone agreed that Ronnie is very likable. He’s a good guy. We’d like to have him on our bowling team, or we’d like to hang out with him and drink iced tea. But the general opinion was that Ronnie’s had 4 years as mayor of La Vergne, and not all that much has changed. Mike Slinker, well, people say he is very likable, and he has a good public image. There were some very major concerns about Mike’s campaign financial disclosure, however. It claims he has less than a thousand dollars into this election (both real money spent, like on signs and publications and “in kind”- including things like, the donated limo he used in the OTD parade) and therefore doesn’t have to provide an itemized campaign disclosure form. Those numbers seem a little off to many of the people who were at the meeting tonight.

Alderman:

Like I said ^ up there, we decided to endorse three people, and each person had three votes. Again, we spent quite some time discussing the candidates, and the three winners were:

Tom Broeker
Chris Farmer
Earl Wilson

(That’s in alphabetical order.)

Tom had some great supporters there, and there were other people there who didn’t know him personally, but liked his answers to the TiLV questionnaire and liked what they had heard about him otherwise. Some of the things people liked was that he presents a very professional image- something La Vergne could certainly use. He has management experience through the ball league and also through- crap, I didn’t write down the exacts, but he’s some kind of…union rep? (Tom, comment and let me know what, exactly, and I’ll fix this bit.) People who know him well said he is an absolute rock in a crisis situation. It was also thought he would be a great advocate for parks and rec.

Now, Chris, we found to be extremely well-informed, especially about public safety issues and our ISO rating. It is clear that he is willing to put in the time to really research an issue before making a decision. We think he is very approachable and intelligent. We also like the fact that, since he is a paramedic, he has the flexibility to be able to make a quick decision and is compassionate toward people. People also really liked his answers to our questionnaire. Really, the overwhelming theme tonight from the people who came out- not Kathy or me- that the questionnaire was pivotal in influencing people’s votes.

One person who really, really stood out on the questionnaire answers was Earl Wilson. People really felt like his answers were well thought out. Someone said they especially liked his answers because he used the common vernacular (heh, that’s my words. I think their words were “he was plain-spoken”). People really like it that he’s running because of his sons, to make this a city they’d like to stay in. And everyone that met Earl thought he was extremely likable. It was mentioned that he appears to be a very good listener.

We liked the other Alderman candidates, we did. One candidate I’d like to mention is Kandy Pierce, we liked her quite a bit. Kathy and I think that with a stronger mayor and stronger Board of Aldermen, she would really be able to do amazing things on the Beer Board. We hope, if she doesn’t happen to win for Alderman, that she would run again.

Again, we thank everyone for coming out tonight. We’d like to thank the Noodle House for providing tasty food and great service.

  1. You might want to hotlink their names to their ‘answer pages’ for people to check them out.

  2. I WAS THERE,,AND I FEEL THAT THERE WAS THREE PEOPLE THAT SHOULD HAVE NOT BEEN THERE AT ALL ,SORRY IT WAS WRONG,TO ME VERY WRONG,,WHY IS A MAN CAN SHOW UP OUT OF NO WHERE LAND DRESS TO THE HILT ,NEVER SAYING A WORD,,UNTIL WE GOT TO TOM.YOU DONT LIVE HERE,YOU DONT VOTE HERE,THE OTHER LADY,SORRY,,MOVER HERE OK,PAY ARE TAXES OK,AND TOM WIFE WAS THERE,,MAYB RONNIE MOSLEY SHOULD HAVE BEEN THERE,

    • Dear Tony,
I am “The Other Lady” you are referring to in your comment. My undrstanding of the purpose for the meeting/gathering was to offer an open forum to discuss La Vergne candidates. Before I shared comments durng the discussions I clearly stated to all present that I am employeed in LaVergne, shop in La Vergne, worship in La Vergne, has been involved in recreational youth sports in La Vergne for 7+ years, served on the Board of the LaVergne Baseball League for 2 years and was a previous resident of La Vergne. So to disqualify my opinions and comments is a bit unwarranted. I am more involved in “your” community than 80% of those who reside in La Vergne. A zip code does not disqualify my opinion or my voice nor does it disquality the benefits of my volunteering in the community. I would go as far to say I have a significant vested interest in the city of La Vergne so the results of this election very much effect my daily life, my friends and my family…….not my zip code.

      • KAREN i would like to say in sorry, normally im a very happy go lucky person, but if you have been here for 7 years, then you know then intimidation that gose on in a electon.AND i really feel with the man and his wife there thats what it was,no one is going to speak up and say your husband is no good,,ok its just that way with anybody, and because i spoke at the meeting his wife pointed me out while i was holding my senna mosley sign, that would have been fine.but when everbody he call me by name and walked down to me,and introduced his self,he he would have stop there that would have been fine.but when on and said i heard you have heard thing about me,i took that as intimidating, its dosent bother me,,but it did others,

  3. Thank you for all your support and everything everyone has done. I could not possibly do this without the support of my wife and son either. O will do my best to make everyone proud if elected. I really can’t tell you how much each and everyones support and confidence in me means. Thank you again.

  5. I’m still a little confused as to why this blog (yeah, I know. It’s not a “blog”) needs to endorse anyone at all. Senna and Chris are regulars on here, so I wasn’t the least bit surprised that their names were picked for the endorsement. I truly apreciated the questionaire and had hope for an open, honest, unbiased discussion of the candidates. It has clearly become a popularity contest, among “12-ish” people, and it’s unfortunate that I can’t use This is La Vergne as an ally this voting season.

    • For one,

La Vergne doesnt have much of a news outlet and for another its a free site put together by Kathy Tyson to let people in town know what is going on…so don’t be upset. Senna watches this site for the people in the coty have concerns and if your an avid reader you would see that she comes on here and answers questions. Do you see the mayor do such? NOPE!!! This site is a good news outlet and last election if it serves me right when this site endorsed someone they won the race. People do have a voice and it’s on this site!!!!

      HAVE A BLESSED DAY!!!!!

      • I’m not “upset”. Did I sound upset? lol

I AM an avid reader and have seen the comments made by both Miss Mosely and and Mr. Farmer. Those comments, themselves, have told me a lot about who they are (which can be good, but not always)

And as far as this being a news outlet, see, I thought the same thing. But when you endorse a candidate, you cease to be a reliable news source on the remaining candidates.

Again, not upset. lol I am fully capable to making my own decisions about these things. I just won’t use This is La Vergne for further research other than the aforementioned questionnaires.

      • Oh and screaming “HAVE A BLESSED DAY!!!!!” seems a little contradictory, don’t you think? Just the slightest hint of sarcasm lol I’m sure you didn’t mean for it to look that way.

  6. I posted my phone number wrong it is 615-403-0941

  7. FACEBOOK,THIS IS LAVERGNE,AND BLOG SITE’S ARE THE NEW WAY OF GETTING THE WORD OUT TO PEOPLE,OF WHO YOU ARE,All readers and bloger’s was wel-come to come,im very sorry more people didnt show up.So the show went on,yes Senna Mosley,Chris Farmer and Kandy are on here alot, but they are the one’s answering are questions,as most of the people of Lavergne dont really know some of the city wording,so we ask,so,would i want to vote for someone that come on here and answer people questions,or someone that dont,if they dont want to take the time to answer are questions on here, what makes people think they want to give us the time of day in person,,,

  8. Adrianne, I have agreed with your position that I don’t see the need to endorse for the same reasons you mentioned. I did not attend last night specifically because I didn’t want to be tied to any endorsements.

However, I disagree with you on this being a popularity contest. First off, all of the candidates were invited to submit the questionairres, and not all of them did. Those who didn’t surely should not epect an endorsement from this site, right? Second, they gave reasons for why certain candidates were endorsed, and I can respect that.

Ronnie Erwin, Sherry Green, and the rest are more than welcome to come here and comment. I don’t begrudge them for not coming here, but because this serves as a news source for many of us, the fact that they’re not here means we know very little about them.

Adrianne, do you mind sharing with us who you are supporting and why? I would love to hear, because I myself am having a tough time deciding who to support.

    • Michael, I completely agree with you. When I said popularity contest I meant specifically the meeting that chose the candidate to endorse.

Like I said, I appreciated the questionnaire and the thought that was put into the questions. The fact that some candidates didn’t take the time to answer was definitely noted in my decision making process. Also considered was the way the candidates have handled themselves in the comments on this blog (they’ve both positively and negatively swayed my opinion).

But, when an endorsement is made on a website that is supposed to inform our community (isn’t that what this place is about? Maybe I’m wrong) then it creates a bias that I’m not comfortable with deciding for whom I will vote.

I haven’t made my choices yet or else I would gladly share them with you.

  9. To me ever mayor or alderman race here or anywhere is a popularty contest,if thats how you would like to put it.It who you are and what you have done.
POPULAR-1)liked or admired by many people or by a specified group 2)of or carried on by the general public,3)adapted to the understanding ,taste,or means of the people..

  10. Is it really that surprising that people would want to vote for people who engage them and answer their questions and appear not to be crazy? Okay, so you don’t like that the site does endorsements. But…it’s our website. I feel like we did our best to make things fair. It was a good meeting.

Which, btw, Michael, I wish you had been there, you could have abstained from voting- a couple of people who were there, did for various reasons. There was a lot of good info there.

And Tony, it was an open meeting, they had every right to be there.

    • “But…it’s our website.”

This is becoming clear to me. I was wrong to think that it was a website designed to inform and engage La Vergne residents (maybe it was the blog title).

But that’s fine. Really. I will continue reading because, truthfully, I have learned a lot about our city here. I’ve lived here 8 years and was so happy when I stumbled upon your blog. I am grateful for it.

      • Thank you for your reading Adrianne, we really do appreciate it. However, let me say this.

How is this *not* a website designed to inform and engage LaV readers? Seriously? Because we endorsed some candidates through an *open* meeting that anyone was welcome to come to?

Most of the major metropolitan daily newspapers endorse candidates. You must forgive Kathy and I for wanting to be like them- we both were journalism majors at college in a time where the internet didn’t exist.

But we’re used to the new media as well, being a part of it since the very beginning. So we take some of what we like from old and some of what we like from new. And there you have this website.

So, Adrianne, I do apologize if you don’t like what we’re doing with our website, but we are doing the very best we can.

      • Please don’t apologize. You really have nothing to apologize for. It’s just one SAHM’s opinion (in between nursing an 8 week old, wrangling a 3 year old, and getting a 6 year old to school lol) and although I’m not naive enough to think my comments would fall on deaf ears, please feel free to take or leave my opinion as you’d like.

I wasn’t trying to insult you or Kathy personally and I am emphatically sorry if I did.

I’m definitely not trying to pick fights with anyone and try to be open-minded with comments left on posts (even ones that use commas instead of periods–looking your way, Tony ;-)

      • We welcome your opinions. We encourage discussion. And we hope that you do make your voting decision based on your own personal choice. Everyone was invited to attend the open meeting. Not everyone who attended was happy with other folks there, but it was what it was… an OPEN MEETING.

The endorsement is not – to me – what’s most important. What’s most important is WHY one was endorsed or why one was not. It allows the opportunity to step back and look at the big picture, not at just one or two comments fired off in the heat of the moment or clearly written to incite a reaction or to “set someone up” for future attack. (Unfortunately we’ve had our share of those and – believe me – based on our ability to republish emails I could start a bonfire here if I chose to print some that I’ve received from candidates.)

As Ivy says, we are not a newspaper. Nor do we accept advertising. Because we do this for free, you can call having to read my occasional point-the-finger-and-fuss-at-someones the price you pay for the time and money I put in here to keep it going. We do this for free, but it’s not free (trust me on this one).

I hope that everyone digests what was said in the endorsement AND in the surveys completed by the candidates. Think about both. Then form your own opinion… AND VOTE. If in the end we have done our part to inform the public, then our work here is done. Successfully so.

      • If i had a Facebook “like” button, Kathy, I’d use it. lol

Thank you for your response. I’d like to reiterate that I really do like what you guys do here and will continue reading. Maybe I’ll bring you guys some candy at Trail of Treats, too ;-)

I’ll also give you 20 bucks for those e-mails LOL

      • Hahahaha… $20 would buy a lot of candy! ;-)

I almost published them, but reminded myself of one of my favorite quotes:

“When the rage for fame attends both great and small, better be damned than not mentioned at all.” – John Wolcot

    • ivy, sorry and yes it was,but i was just going by the name of the site,THIS IS LAVERGNE,but still believe that even a open meeting on something like this, that a out side person should have been there, and still even more to only say something about one person, even the lady that didnt live here talked up about the other ones.and others i talked to after the meeting did feel uncomforable with him there, and his wife, she was not a part of the meeting just when it came to tom, heck bring the other lady on,,at least she was apart of it,,

      • Want to know where the name “This is LaVergne” came from? When blogs were exploding in popularity, my friend dragged me to the local “bloggers” meeting we used to have. There I met the founder of “This is Smyrna” and thought… heck, why don’t we have one for LaVergne? Because our cities sit side-by-side, we adopted the same side-by-side name.

Today, we’re still friends with the This is Smyrna site and its lead administrator Gunner. http://thisissmyrnatn.blogspot.com/

Another side note, I totally get that we could possibly alienate office-holders by not endorsing them. Then again, merely existing online here is enough to alienate them… true that.

  11. This is Ivy, logged in as Kathy ’cause I’m hanging out in her office. Adrienne, don’t worry. Your comments are valuable to us even when- maybe especially when- they don’t always agree with us. I hope you don’t discount what we have to say because there are endorsements on the site. More than anything, we wish to be fair.

And by the way, I hope next time we have a TiLV meet-up, you come out to see us. Bring the rug rats, I have a pile of them myself. ;)

  12. A tiny bit off topic, but does anyone know the early voting hours? The RC Election commission site is slower than molassas in January and I can’t find the hours. I know we are still early voting at the city center, or am I totally off base on that too? Someone hold my hand here, too much life stress getting in the way of coherent thought!

    • Early voting is October 13-28.

      Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.,

      Sat. 10/16, 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., and Sat. 10/23, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

It is also my understanding that it is at the Civic Auditorium.

  13. I’m really sorry that I couldn’t be there last night, but I’m sure no one would have appreciated me showing up with a cranky 2 year old in tow. I do know for certain that I will be voting for Senna Mosley, and I’d like to share one of my main reasons for doing so, as I didn’t see it mentioned above.

Senna has taken the time to go out and get the training she needs to be an effective civil leader. She has taken every class she can at an Elected Officials Academy offered by the Municipal Technical Advisory Service, which is part of UT’s Institute for Public Service. They cover topics such as zoning, economic development, and (hello!) ethics.

She also has taken eight certifications from FEMA’s Emergency Management Institute, which is why she was such an effective leader during the aftermath of the flood.

To sum up, yes, she’s very likeable, responsive, big-hearted person, and she has the goods to back it all up and make her a great leader. She’s simply the most qualified candidate. Period.

Full disclosure: If I sound like a brochure for Senna Mosley, it’s because I volunteered my services and designed one for her. After reading her comments over the last few years here, and checking out information on her own site, I decided early on that I wanted to back her. I had never met her before I offered her my help, but I felt even better about my choice once I did.

  14. Sarah- I think the next TiLV meetup should be a kid-friendly one so everyone can come out and mingle!!

  15. I will be posting the campaign finance disclosure forms from the candidates tomorrow. Today, I’ve run out of time.

  16. I would have like to seen a face to face open forum debate between all the candidates and I think that would have weeded out the ones that we don’t need, I am sure some would have been against it and that would remove them quickly but it’s to late now.

    • Steve —

The debate would have been up to the League of Women Voters and/or the Chamber to do. I think the DNJ actually coordinated Smyrna’s.

The Chamber relied on Smyrna to contact us about combining our debate — Smyrna’s planning was apparently too far along to do that, according to Chassen with the Chamber.

It’s unfortunate, but we’ll just have to go with what we have, I guess.

  17. I want to thank the 12-ish that were able to attend last night. Congratulations to the 4 endorsed! I may not be one of the endorsed, but I will still follow the sight and remain active in this city no matter the out come of this election. I want to thank Kathy for the vote of confidence on my work with the Beer Board. I will say that I feel a lot of ground work has been accomplished in the last five years with that ordinance and there is still more that needs to be done. Really feel I would be able to accomplish more on the Mayor/Alderman Board and if given the chance want to prove to all that I have the entire City’s best interest at heart. I am no stranger to hard work be it mentally or physically and have a great desire to work for the citizens of La Vergne if given that opportunity.
One other thing I am also running for the future of my boys and all the youth I have worked with during the past 15 years here in La Vergne. Best of luck to US all!

  18. I AM NO QUITTER! I am not giving up at all. I am simply accepting what this site fairly as possible decided to do and showing no hard feelings. I know who I am and what I am capable of doing if elected. I will be at early voting all I can and I will be at the polls all day on November 2nd. I will return calls, knock doors, return letters, answer questions, and try to get as many votes as possible until 7pm on Novermber 2nd. I will do all of this honestly, openly and without walking on others to do it. I know who I am, what my values are and I will not change or forget those for an election, a position, or any individual. I am a strong woman that has had to fight for many things in my life and I have never backed away from a challenge and have no plans to start.
I hope this post, unlike the last is better understood. I am not giving up on anything, but I will not fuss at Kathy, Ivy, or any of the others that took their time to go discuss and vote in order to inform the citizens of who the candidates are in one of the few forums available.
Just in case some one needs my contact information:

    • Kandy, Thank you so much for continuing to make yourself available to TiLaV readers. That you have the determination and grit to say what you have said, that you have experience with city committees (and therefore a certain amount of experience with city business), and that you just graduated from college as an adult student with a 3.98 GPA (I just learned this), you have won one of my two votes for Alderman. No matter how the election goes (and I hope it goes well for you), I think the people of this community are very fortunate to have you in our corner. Good luck! ~kathy

      • all i have to say is AMEN,,,,,,,,,,,,KATHY,

      • No thanks needed Kathy. I just wanted everyone to understand I do not walk away from anything I start and if elected I will work very hard for the citizens of La Vergne. Thank you for posting my GPA and for your vote.

  19. On a positive note, I would like to personally invite each and everyone of you to breakfast tomorrow morning at Willstan’s Grille on Madison Square Blvd.between 6- 9a.m. regardless of whom you are supporting in the campaign.
I also have invited all the candidates to be present. In lieu of a debate this might be an excellent forum for any of you to get to know each candidate or ask your questions.
Pancakes, sausage, juice, coffee will be served and my committee will pick up the tab. I truly hope to see everyone there.
