OPEN THREAD FRIDAY: Swearing-In Date Set

The Swearing-In of the new Mayor of LaVergne and Board of Aldermen has been confirmed for Thursday, November 18th at 6:00 p.m. at City Hall.  Are you planning to attend?  If yes, go to the city’s web page and take part in the poll so they can determine if the regular meeting room space will be adequate for this special event.

I am looking forward to hearing from Mayor Elect Mosley and the Board members to hear more about their immediate plans for the city and the long-term ideas.

What would be the first five things you would do as a newly elected city official?   I would:

  1. Audit audit audit the financial records of the city.
  2. Meet with as many city employees as possible along with department heads to hear their concerns and ideas (and also meet with the H.R. director to structure a method to review the performance of city workers, and subsequently reward the outstanding workers or dismiss those who have embraced mediocrity).
  3. Go back to the flooded areas and see what has been done to prevent future flooding on behalf of those families hardest hit, what has NOT been done, and then make sure it’s done.
  4. OPEN COMMENTS at meetings so that the board can still conduct business, but residents may still voice concerns in a democratic way without having to get on the schedule 24 hours in advance of a meeting.
  5. Get codes to get all those trashy looking advertising signs picked up.  Find a way to – in the future – charge $5 or $10 p/sign to the owners and collect!

And you?  What are some of your ideas?  OPEN THREAD!

  1. Number one . . . audit and re-audit and re-re-audit (is that even a word?), as necessary!! Of utmost importance is to bring in someone from outside the city to review the numbers. I’ve been an in-house auditor and altough I was honest, it is incredibly easy to “tweak” the numbers if you so choose.

    • I agree on bringing someone in from outside the city (like the State, maybe)…this should give you and the residents of La Vergne the correct numbers.

  2. An outside firm audits the city every year, I don’t see the need. Once that audit is completed, then the state reviews it. I don’t see the point in spending at least $40,000-50,000 in order to do another audit.

  3. Also, where does it say that the swearing in ceremony will be at 6:00?? I don’t see it on the city website. It is usually done during the meeting itself, which doesn’t start until 7:00. If it is at an earlier time, they will have to have 2 separate swearing in ceremonies, because they will have to swear in whoever is appointed by the board to fill Mayor Mosely’s alderman spot.

    • 1.)Mayor elect Mosley and Alderman Chris Farmer have to be Sworn in before they can vote on the seat Mayor Elect Mosley has left vacant.
2.) I personally think the first order of Business after the Board is complete should be to look into the Water Treatment Plant!!
Should we continue to pay an outside company to run our plant at the excessive cost to the City?
3.) You can conduct and audit but as Blah Blah said there is one done every year.
4.) Change the Bid Limit for Purchasing from 10k back to and 5K.
5.) Talk to employees and see how they are being treated ( make sure they don’t suffer retaliation if they complain about legit issues with there Supervisors and/or Department Heads.)

      • Totally agree with you Concerned Citizen…especially #5…that was the problems I had but nothing was ever done with my supervisor…..that person is still there and has a “side kick” to agree with her….look forward to the months ahead to see what will be done….

  4. frist to get a fed, audit, i think the new mayor and alderman have to prove wrong spending,,thats going to take time, and if thats there,,we need it,,so 40,000 dollars is nothing to what mayb gone, that the city can hang over there heads later,i think mrs, mosley, chris farmer and tom broaker needs to know what they are working with to be able to do whats right by us,,,

  5. 6 or 7 It DON’T matter, get there at 5 and hob knob with folks and welcome the new S-Team as it were and tail gate till the SWEAR IN. LOL

  6. I know when I first met Senna she stressed just making sure people were doing their jobs properly, i.e. consulting the city attorney and taking discrimination complaints seriously so we would quit losing money in lawsuits. And of course, making sure people are being billed for water and those bills are being collected on.

    • Sarah, you have hit one thing right on the nose….”making sure people are being billed for water and those bills are being collected on”. Worked in that department and I fully agree on this point for sure…too much wrong doing in that department….

      • I want to know how that *&%^ quarry is still operating when their water is supposed to be cut off! Grrrrr.

  7. just wait until the 18th and then we will see what happenes.
