LHS in Top 10 of Bands

The La Vergne High School band traveled to Annapolis, MD this past weekend to compete in The Grand National Champions.  The band has a long history of outstanding leadership, under the direction of Edward Freytag.  I have a musical background and have always been impressed with this outstanding band.

The dedication of parents involved with the band boosters is also impressive and proves that with parental participation, high outcomes are achieved.  The DNJ wrote about La Vergne’s outstanding band,

Now in his ninth year at the school, Freytag said this band has been “top of the class” this season. It claimed the Tennessee State Championship at Carson-Newman College, was named a finalist at the Music City Invitational and finished second at its season opener in Southhaven, Miss. The color guard and percussion teams have finished in the top three at each competition, as well.

Congratulations to LHS band, Mr. Freytag and the many dedicated parents involved.  That you placed ninth in the United States Scholastic Bands Association Grand Nationals (competing with 98 bands) is certainly a job well done and makes La Vergne very proud of your accomplishments.  Here’s  a link to their finish.

  1. I was in marching band in HS, so it makes me very proud to have such a great band program here in town. Let’s hope the tradition continues!

  2. I was in the band and orchestra from the fourth grade til I graduated High School, and if it wasn’t for music, I probably would not have graduated. I went to a very small public school, 60 in my class of ’72, and we would march in all of the local parades the small towns would have each summer.

  3. I remember my day in the marching band at LHS back when Greg Lawson was director, back in those days the Mayors Cup at Music City Invitational was the top goal for us. We achieved it 2 years in a row before I left. Good to see the success continue.

  4. Congrats to LHS Band…

  5. Greg Lawson directed the best La Vergne bands i’ve seen to date. The current band is average but by far not even in the top 10 in the state. The state championship is held at MTSU the last Saturday of October and I can’t ever remember La Vergne being in attendance. Siegel High School from Murfreesboro is the current state champions. The USSBA circuit mentioned in this post is a knock off of the national circuit called Bands of America that has the most recognized national championship.

    • Thomas, I’m sorry that this group of 14-18 year olds don’t meet your high standards of excellence…

… But as far as the rest of us are concerned, these guys are AWESOME!

      • I thought someone would give a response like that. My comment was extremely mild compared to what people say about high school football, baseball, or other sporting teams. Also, sometimes the harshest words come from the parents of the 14-18 year olds on those teams.

      • Thomas, are you a parent of one of the kids in the LHS band? Are you a parent of a child in another band in this area?

There’s nothing wrong with saying you thought the previous band director was better, but your comment is directed at the kids who never had Lawson as a band director.

And your comment about the BOA being more pretigous than the USSBA is just about as valuable as arguing about whether the PAC 10 is better than the SEC – there is no universal answer.

    • That’s okay Thomas, you have the right to your opinion. I take it you are a Siegel fan. That’s okay. We are PROUD parents of The LaVergne High School Marching Band. We still ranked 9th in the NATION out of 98 bands that competed. Just because you think the USSBA is a knock off doesn’t make it true. I am proud of Siegel for their accomplishments as well. It just shows that Rutherford County schools have great bands. I think the major thing is LaVergne High has had so much negative in the past that we want to celebrate every positive thing that comes out of there.

  6. Given my inability to hum on key, to clap or tap my feet with the beat of any music, and that babies cry and dogs howl when I do vocalize, I say Way To Go!! to our local band. Not only am I just a tad jealous of your mad music skills, but I also applaud you for your accomplishments! WTG LHS Band!

  7. LHS Marching Band has a great bunch of kids. And parents. The kids deserve a high five and a great job…. not a someone putting them down.
