Trail of Treats Accepting Canned Food Donations

funny-pictures-cat-has-finally-had-enough-pettingLet’s hope it doesn’t rain this Saturday – Halloween!  From 2:00 – 4:00 p.m., the Parks and Recreation department of LaVergne is hosting its annual “Trail of Treats” at Veterans Memorial Park.  The walking trail will be lined with various community organizations, businesses, etc. who will be handing out treats to kids.  In addition, there will be a spider web course, grave digging for prizes, and more.  Kids should wear their costumes!

Canned food items will be accepted for the local food bank at this FREE event.  I’ve heard that the shelves of the food bank are getting pretty bare right now… to the point that my office will also be accepting donations of non-perishable items in our front lobby of Bob Parks Realty on Sam Ridley Pkwy.

If you come, please stop by and say hello to me and my friends at the Tennessee Twirlers scenic overview (I couldn’t think of another name for a rest spot on the trail).  Our twirlers will be there showing their skills and may even give the young’uns a quick twirling lesson!

Prescriptions May Be Turned In

My friend sent me this that she found on another news site:

UPDATED TO ADD FROM COMMENT:  The event has been moved to the front parking lot at City Hall.

The La Vergne Police Department is hosting a “Drug Take-Back” event at the Multi-Purpose Building from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Nov. 21st. Anyone with expired or used medicine is urged to drop it off at the building on that date.

Please leave the medications in the original bottles.  Mark through or tape over the labels from the bottles before you drop them off. Please keep drug information on the container. The drugs will be destroyed.  The Multi Purpose Building is located behind City Hall, beside the ball fields.

Have you heard of SIMA?

I read in the newspaper the other day about a group of Independent Merchants in Smyrna.  They were banding together to keep the “little guys” in business and to not get “swallowed” by the big box stores.  I thought this was a fabulous idea!  The same day I went with my daughter to get her oil changed.  And lo and behold, guess what was on their countertop?  An application for SIMA!?!  So, I, of course, had to ask if La Vergne businesses could join their club…seeing as how we are the “little sister” of Smyrna.  I was told “NO!  It’s only for Smyrna businesses.  Why don’t you people in La Vergne start your own group?”  Okay, I’m paraphrasing, but you get the jest.

So, what say you, La Vergenians?  Would you like to compete with Smyrna or just be a business on the road to get to Smyrna?  My vote is “Battle!!!!”

The People of LaVergne

I’m thinking about a new writing project here on This is LaVergne. I could write about the housing market and that we’ve currently got almost 300 homes in LaVergne available. I could write about the Walden Pumpkin Farm and ask if you’ve gone yet this year. I could write about the upcoming production of Little House on the Prairie in Nashville starring Melissa Gilbert – who was once “Half Pint” – performing as “Ma.”

I could write references for repair people I know who are fabulous or mortgage companies who do wonderful work. To go along with our pigs in the neighborhood theme, I could write about how Paris Hilton now has a pet pig – teacup sized.

But I just feel … I don’t know … that I need some inspiration! I’ve been giving serious consideration to finding people from our community and featuring interviews with them on this site in November. A new person each day. Is this something you’d be interested in reading?

Volunteers Available

From our email, a request:

Does anyone know of any volunteer opportunities for a couple of LHS juniors over Christmas break?  They’re 16 and 17 and really want to do something with animals, if at all possible.  Every place I’ve contacted either requires the volunteers to be 18, or the organization wants more of a time commitment than a couple of weeks in December.  I figured finding something would be a no-brainer and can’t believe how much difficulty I’m having, but perhaps I’m just not looking in the right place.  I will admit that the girls’ intentions aren’t totally altruistic (they want to show some volunteer work on college applications), but I still thought I’d have no trouble finding an organization that could use their help for a few weeks.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I know the Salvation Army is looking for volunteer bell-ringers through the holidays … in fact if my daughter’s parade schedule permits, I’d like to do this myself.  Also one year I took my Girl Scout troop to Second Harvest Food Bank for about four or five hours of food sorting.  We went through a couple of tons in that short time and the pallets kept coming.  I *know* they can always use help!
Good luck, Sherry!

Free Kittens…

A friend of mine has four free kittens to give away.  If you’re interested, you can find him over at his blog site … just ignore that he hasn’t updated in MONTHS.   Meanwhile, I give you LOLCats because iz funny.
