Red Cross Benefit on Saturday

My friend Mark has a big heart when it comes to charity fundraising.  A night manager at the Smyrna Bowling Center, he often works with the business to organize events that will benefit others.  This time, Mark is up to his elbows in a fundraiser that will benefit victims of the Murfreesboro tornado that  hit on Good Friday.  He’s planned some GREAT activities that are family friendly … all for a great cause!

This Saturday from Noon to 4:00 p.m.,  half the proceeds from bowling will go to the Heart of Tennessee chapter of the Red Cross.  Children can bowl for $3.00 p/game and adults for $4.00 p/game (shoe rental extra).  In addition, the parking lot will have lots of fun things planned, including inflatable jumpie thingie for the kids, karaoke, a dunking both, hot dogs, and a climbing wall.  Smyrna is sending a firetruck, a hummer will be there from the National Guard, martial arts demonstrations, a tattoo artist doing airbrush tattoos (not permanent), and MUCH MORE.  Visit the Smyrna Bowling Center site for more information.

Please show your support for this worthy cause and have a good time doing it!  Donations accepted!

Something new on Waldron Road…

OMG!!!  There are new things on Waldron Road… has anyone noticed besides me???  Okay, I can hear the crickets chirping and the neighborhood rooster crowing…but…  They actually put down new PAVEMENT on Waldron Road… not as much as is needed, but at least you won’t lose a filling in your teeth when you go past La Vergne Fire Station #2 and Stoneridge Parkway.

And then a piece on down the road by Champion’s Choice, there are strange metal poles up that look like they might actually hold traffic lights.  I almost wrecked when I saw those!  Does this mean something other than we will have 8 traffic lights within a 2.2 mile stretch of road?  Dare I dream that we might actually get traffic lights on poles, like those in Smyrna, everywhere else in our fair city?!?

And Congrats to the La Vergne Wine and Spirits store for 7 great years!!!

We Don’t Want No Stinkin’ Rain

Tomorrow the mom’s in my Girl Scout troop are hosting a yard sale with proceeds being donated to our troop.  So we don’t want no stinkin’ rain!  If you’re interested, we are going to try to be set up by 7:00 a.m. at my office (Bob Parks Realty, 557 Sam Ridley Pkwy., W., Smyrna).   It is being held alongside the SRFC ‘99 Rapids’ select soccer team yard sale.  In fact they deserve most of the credit because one of the players is the son of another agent and it was HER idea.

So depending on the rain, we’ll be here from 7’ish until ??.  Please stop by.  We’ll have clothes, purses, shoes.  I don’t know what kind of furniture we’ll have, but there’s sure to be an assortment of STUFF.

Also, don’t forget about the Rutherford County Yard Sale Listing Page if you want to see what else is going on!  See you tomorrow?  Maybe?

Chicken Pad Thai

I know I’ve written about the Noodle House Thai Restaurant time and again, but anytime I can give them a shout-out – I will – because they’re THAT GOOD and I want the restaurant to thrive!

So it’s with great pleasure that I relay the news that there are new prices for the lunch menu.   From their Facebook page,

Beginning the June 1st for dine in and carry out, all of our Lunch Menu will be $5.50 for choice of chicken $6.50 for choice of Pork $6.50 for choice of Beef $7.50 for choice of Shrimp Soup and Spring Roll will no longer be served with the food but Soup still be available for $1.00 (dine in only).

Wondering what to do for lunch this week, next week?  Don’t forget the Noodle House!

And no, this is not an advertisement.  It’s a big thumbs up from the fans in the community!

Congratulations Class of 2009

I may be partial to LaVergne High School’s class of 2009 since my daughter is a member, but WARM CONGRATULATIONS on their graduation Saturday evening.  There were nearly 400 students who graduated in a wonderful ceremony!  My friend who’s been to nearly 15 high school graduations said LHS’s BY FAR was the BEST she’s seen.  So kudos to the students graduates, teachers, and administration who put together such a wonderful program!

Here are some photos of both the rehearsal and the actual event, held at the Murphy Center Saturday, May 16 at 6:00 p.m.

REHEARSAL

Graduation rehearsal was Wednesday, May 13th from Noon – 3:00 p.m.

Speaking of choirs and on a side note, the LaVergne MIDDLE School Choir is hosting its spring fundraiser, The Chocolate House – Back to the 80s on Tuesday May 19th at 7:01pm.  The cost of admission is $5.00 and the event will be held at LMS.

Choraliers Rehearse

Mr. Daniels is pretty no-nonsense.  These people are serious about the dignity of the graduation ceremony.

Mr. Daniels is all serious.

They DO get to throw their caps at the end … I got a great photo of that coming up!

The Big Night

The Daily News Journal also has photos here.  While my daughter didn’t make it in any, I recognized many of her friends.

The seats were packed

My girl is in the middle of the crowd down below – she’s the one with the long blond hair.

Long Blond Hair

My friend was amazed that the band was there, along with the choir and all kinds of other dignitaries.  If I remember correctly, Mayor Irwin, Alderwoman Sherry Green, Alderwoman Senna Mosley, and Alderman Dennis Waldron were introduced, along with school board members and our city commissioner Doug Shafer.  I’ve probably left someone off, but I wanted to thank all of our elected officials for their support.

How awesome

Up go the caps!

Graduation 038

Again, warm congratulations to the Class of 2009!  I heard that in all, the graduates received nearly $5 MILLION in scholarship funds.  That’s incredible and worthy of our praise!  We’re very proud of you!!!

Saggy Breeches? Sue Them!

With all the other problems facing this state and country, I find it somewhat discouraging that saggy pants are what’s being tackled by the Legislature.  It appears that some people are offended at the sight of seeing someone’s underwear due to the fashion (un)statement of wearing saggy britches.

I don’t like the look.  It makes me laugh seeing kids having to hold up their pants while they walk.  It makes me laugh harder when I hear about kids whose pants fall down because they ran with saggy slacks.  Seeing the saggy pants – to me – just shows a lack of common sense.  Yes it wouldn’t be a bad thing to prohibit in a high school dress code, but to make it ILLEGAL?

I think our elected officials have more important things to worry about.  What do you think?

The Tents are up

The weather may not want to cooperate, but that’s OK, we’ve put up tents and the Hugh Duffy Cove Yard Sale is still under way! So there’s no need to sit at home and wait for the rain to end, grab your umbrella and come on out to the Hugh Duffy Cove multi-family yard TENT sale!

Some Summertime Fun

You know I’m usually pretty good about posting here.  But when I have to run to keep up with life, my best intentions for this site sometimes falter.  I am grateful, therefore, that others have been posting (thanks Fortune Cookies!) and for the info that was sent to me today by the city publicity director.  I’ll share it here!

A fundraiser yard sale is being held on May 16th in the lot next to Merchandise Liquidators.  Proceeds go to the LaVergne Police Athletic League (PAL).  PAL will be hosting a RAD Kids self empowerment class on June 4-6 for kids aged seven to 13.  For more info, go here.

In addition, PAL will hold summer camp July 27 – 31. The camp will take place at the Multi-Purpose Building, behind City Hall, by the ball fields. For more information, call PAL Executive Director Gerry Howse at 287-8730.
